Artist Statement
My paintings and drawings begin with very basic information and resolve themselves as I work. When the art is spontaneous, it creates tension that needs resolution to take form. The outcome of this process is never certain—surprise, frustration, and discovery are my trusted guides. Like jazz, the work evolves from chance encounters; sometimes with the frenetic energy of free jazz, sometimes as smooth as a swing ballad.
My art revolves around humans’ relationships and connections, both with themselves and their environment.
“Follow the instructions to the door. When you get to the door, throw the instructions away.”
—Gene Holtan

I grew up in a small town on Route 66 in the Arizona desert, received a BFA in photography from Arizona State University and lived in San Francisco during the revolutionary ‘60s. I am now 74 years old and deep into my career as a painter.
I live and work in Oakland with my wife, Hulda; two cats, Millie & Desmond; a parrot, Godzilla & 4 canaries.
